Chronology of cameras Lomography
This is a single purpose novelty camera. Lomography is dedicated to the idea that unexpected outcomes are evidence of creativity. The 'fisheye' lens is said to have an angle of acceptance of about 170 degrees, but the 'viewfinder' includes only about 90 degrees.
It is a small, neat and attractive unit, made of very thin plastic. The shutter release, rewind crank and hinged back all show signs of weakness. There is no drive wheel in the film plane to help move the film from the cassette to the take up reel.
The (plastic?) lens has a constant aperture of F8 and the shutter operates at 1/100th second for an exposure value (EV) of about thirteen (13). The aperture of F8 was probably necessary for the inbuilt flash, which would have a range of only 1 - 2 metres for 100 ISO film. The top and bottom of the circular image is cut off by the rectangular 36 x 24 mm frame.
Several writers note that the lens barrel produces a massive shadow in the lower right side of the image when flash is used. (surprise!) Others have noted that although it has a 'B' setting for long exposures, it does not have a tripod socket, or provision for a cable release.
An aperture of F11 and a slower shutter (like millions of Kodaks), might have improved the performance of the lens. The flash and the viewfinder are simply unnecessary. The camera has an 'MX' switch for multiple exposures on one frame, an essential requirement for all lomography enthusiasts.
Like many of Lomography's recent products, the Fisheye 2 was available in a dozen (or more) different colours and patterns as a fashion accessory. This basic model initially cost US$75, but some cosmetic variations cost US$150. It might appeal to bored teenagers.
